PharmD Sixth Year Internship
INTERNSHIP
1) Specific Objectives
i) Patient Care
Provide patient care in cooperation with patients, prescribers, and other members of an interprofessional health care team, based on sound therapeutic principles and evidence-based data. This includes considering relevant legal, ethical, social, cultural, economic, and professional issues, emerging technologies, and evolving biomedical, pharmaceutical, social/behavioral/administrative, and clinical sciences that may impact therapeutic outcomes.
ii) Resource & Medication Management
Manage and utilize healthcare system resources in cooperation with patients, prescribers, other healthcare providers, and administrative/support staff. Promote health, provide/assess/coordinate safe and timely medication distribution, and improve therapeutic outcomes of medication use.
iii) Health Promotion & Disease Prevention
Promote health improvement, wellness, and disease prevention in cooperation with patients, communities, at-risk populations, and other members of an interprofessional healthcare team.
iv) Monitoring National Health Programmes
Demonstrate skills in monitoring national health programmes and schemes aimed at providing preventive and promotive healthcare services to the community.
v) Leadership Development
Develop leadership qualities to function effectively as a member of the healthcare team organized to deliver health and family welfare services in the existing socio-economic, political, and cultural environment.
vi) Effective Communication
Communicate effectively with patients and the community.
2) Other Details
i) All parts of the internship shall be done, as far as possible, in institutions in India. If difficulties arise, the matter may be referred to the Pharmacy Council of India for consideration on merits.
ii) Where an intern is posted to a district hospital for training, a committee consisting of representatives of the college/university and the district hospital administration shall regulate the training. A certificate of satisfactory completion shall be obtained from the relevant administrative authorities and countersigned by the Principal or Dean of the college.
iii) Every candidate, after passing the final Pharm.D. or Pharm.D. (Post Baccalaureate) examination, must undergo compulsory rotational internship for twelve months to the satisfaction of the College and University to be eligible for the degree.
3) Assessment of Internship
i) Record of Work & Evaluation
The intern shall maintain a record of work, verified and certified by the preceptor (teacher practitioner) under whom they work.
Assessment shall be based on record scrutiny and objective evaluation using situational tests in knowledge, skills, and attitude during and at the end of training.
Based on performance, the Dean/Principal shall issue a certificate of satisfactory completion, enabling the university to award the degree or declare eligibility.
ii) Criteria for Satisfactory Completion
Evaluation will be based on the following (each scored 0–5):
Proficiency of knowledge required for each case management.
Competency in skills for providing Clinical Pharmacy Services.
Responsibility, punctuality, case work-up, and patient care involvement.
Teamwork (behavior with healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, colleagues).
Initiative, participation in discussions, research aptitude.
Score Guide:
Poor: 0 | Fair: 1 | Below Average: 2 | Average: 3 | Above Average: 4 | Excellent: 5
A score of less than 3 in any category = Unsatisfactory completion of internship.
